... illegals should have no coverage While that is something that seems the right way to go, since they aren't normally paying into the system, there are some practical problems with making it a blanket policy.  One major one is that everyone can carry communicable diseases, and if they aren't treated, they can get out of control and affect everyone. I'm thinking of diseases like STDs, polio, measles, chicken pox, or more serious diseases like TB, cholera or typhoid fever. If illegals are afraid to seek medical care for such things, the cost to society as a whole can be higher than if the treatment had simply been provided with no questions. The best idea is simply to get control of the illegal situation.  I can't understand why the government has such trouble handling the problem.  If Visa and Mastercard can tell you instantly with a swipe of their cards that the card is legal, why can't the government require employers to check on the validity of a SSI number, and give instant feedback.  If a 50 year old wants work, and produces a number from someone 8 years old living on the other side of the country, it should be a pretty good clue that there is a problem. Pretty good logic here. As we can see from the current debacle, trying to solve every problem in the universe in on fell swoop with thousands of pages of impenetrable legislation.  (I don't blame them

The rental company wouldn't let you rent the car without proof that you have insurance or you buy it from them. Absolutely, patently not true in any instance I've ever seen and I've rented in areas ranging from NY and California to TN. Never, ever, ever have I been asked for anything other than my driver's license when renting a car. You sign a waiver when you rent a car agreeing to pay the full damage sustained under your rental contract coverage period if you have an accident. They'll push like hell to get you to sign up for their supplemental coverage and you should take it if you don't own a car, but I've never seen any state where they can force you to take it. Honestly, many people here are starting to speak about things they have very little knowledge of.   OK, I have little experience in car rentals, but it comes to the same thing, either you pay or your insurance company pays and raises your rates. If you have an at-fault accident in the rental car (or if you borrowed a friend's car), it is just like if you had an at-fault accident in your own car.  Your liability coverage is the same regardless of whose car it is, since it is _you_ who are covered for liability, not the car. Indeed.  OTOH, is that an argument that we shouldn't be providing them care for life-threatening conditions that aren't communicable, as we do today? No, it says that if they appear at an emergency room with life- threatening illness, they get treated, but they also get a bill.   Collecting will be another issue.

In <706785hi6thpd6n0b6s8am3k692t4u9...@4ax.com Cyrus Afzali <pnsm...@lnubb.pbz writes: Ask even people like Bill Frist that, whose father is the creator of Columbia/HCA, the world's largest hospital chain. Bill himself has made a fortune as one of the country's preeminent cardiothorasic surgeons and he'll tell you we can't sustain the rate increases. On that, there's universal agreement. This is the same Bill Frist who made that remote tele-diagnosis of Terri Schiavo _base_d on a heavily edited 15 second video clip, eh? In England they understand that surgeons aren't physicians ... Don't know what this means, but a surgeon has all the education and more that a GP would have. Again, no one is qualified to remotely diagnose anybody

Perhaps you, as a major railfan, do not own a car. (Cars are insured, not drivers.) Not true,  not true, not true. Drivers are the primary consideration when pricing rates and cars are secondary. Trust me, this is true. Cars make a difference on your premium, but the biggest impact is your driving record and things that influence rates like age, driving history, etc. Have you never read your policy? It is the car, not the driver, that is insured. Your driving record is factored into everything in your policy even if your name isn't explicitly listed by every car. Do you understand what liability insurance is for? It's in the event you hit someone else and cause injury or damage. Cars can't injure someone on their own, only drivers. This is a semantical thing you're trying to point out just _base_d on the way policies are printed.- Well duh. It's a legal document. The wording is signficant. It is not the driver who is insured, but the vehicle. You don't carry your insurance card with you, you leave it in the vehicle
