someone please tell me why we want the gov't to be doing things like this: A new bill in the U.S. House would allow pet owners to deduct up to $3,500 for qualified pet-care expenses for household pets, including vet bills. I have a feeling some of you guys might think this is what the gov't should be doing. we would then be on opposite sides of the spectrum

My best guess is that they don't want people to abandon their pets if they're reaching the point where they can no longer afford to keep the pet. It would probably overload shelters or lead to a lot of euthanizing of cats and dogs... So they're encouraging people to keep their pets. Even though we consider pets a luxury, over 60% of US households have some kind of pet. I still think it's a dumb idea, though.
